Heavy Duty Bunks

Adult bunk beds for low ceilings

Under a standard 8 ft (96 in) ceiling, the shortest adult-rated bed we found is the Maxtrix Classic Twin XL in its low version: 61.5 in tall, leaving 34.5 in above the frame. For queen over queen, the Tahoe from Bunk Beds for Adults is shortest at 63.25 in. Francis Lofts & Bunks builds each bed to your ceiling height instead.

Ceiling height minus the bed's overall height leaves the space above the frame Ceiling (96 in for 8 ft) Floor Overallheight Space abovethe frame
The table's "space above the frame" is 96 in minus the bed's overall height. Your head room on the top bunk is less, because you sit on a mattress below the top of the rails.

How to check your room

  1. Measure floor to ceiling in the exact spot the bed will go. Check for beams, fans and sloped ceilings.
  2. Ask the maker for "floor to top of the upper platform." None of the ten pages we read give it; most give only overall height.
  3. Subtract that number and your mattress thickness from your ceiling height. What's left is how much room the top sleeper has.
  4. Sit upright in a chair and measure from the seat to the top of your head to compare.
